Fun with Llamas

There's all sorts of fun things you can do with llamas.

Showing

The most organized of these activities is showing. The Alpaca and Llama Show Association (ALSA) website has information about events, rules, and just about anything else related to its activities.

  • There are some "schooling" shows around, some of which are ALSA qualifiers.
  • There are local shows (of varying degrees of size). Most of these include conformation, showmanship and performance classes. Some include youth classes and/or alpaca classes.
  • There are Regional shows, in which you can only compete if your llama has earned a certain number of points in the previous year.
  • And last but not least, there is a Championship show. To compete in this show, you must have either a Champion llama or one that earned points at a Regional show.

Parades

It really neat to take llamas in parades. It's even more fun if you can get a bunch of your llama owning friends to make up a unit with you. Bear in mind that unless it's particularly cool in your part of the country, that 4th of July parades will probably be way too hot (weatherwise and on their feet) for your llama(s). Christmas parades are usually safe though.

Llama "drill teams"

Those enterprising folks in Ohio have developed "drill teams". These usually require setting up a drill AND having enough llamas close enough so that at least a few joint training sessions can be held.

Public events

Wine festivals, ag shows and the like often welcome a llama presence.

Local public educational and personal events

You can take your *well behaved* llama to high schools, libraries, nursing homes, and the like. It's fun, and can be a really exciting experience for those who get to share your llama with you.
