Llama Fiber - 'Angel' after shearing |
| At Heavenly Llamas, we believe in shearing most
of our llamas annually (why breed for exquisite spinnable fiber if you don't
use it?!) We shear our llamas for the first time somewhere between 1 and
2 years of age. We shear in May and June due to our harsher climate here.
On the longer fibered llamas, we shear almost to the skin, since there's
plenty of summer to gain a good thick coat before it's needed. Cindy started
out hand-shearing with a sewing scissors, tried a sheep shears and an electric
shears, and went back to the scissors. The scissors seems to be the quietest
and most comfortable way to shear for both llama and human. Each llama takes
approximately 30 minutes to barrel shear, once they are surface brushed.
Our fiber is sorted by color and length, and price is determined by fineness and "silkiness". If a fiber is too old, and/or has breaks in it, it is listed as "craft use only". Due to Cindy's being WAY too busy these days, most of the fiber is sold raw (contains chaff; higher micron count fiber contains more guard hairs). Please email or call for a current price and availability list. As always with products purchased from Heavenly Llamas, satisfaction is guaranteed! |
